The activity of the Data Science domain research comprises those research lines that regard digital traces of human behaviour as first-order objects for scientific investigation. These activities have a strong interdisciplinary character, covering research on social media, on-line social networks, pervasive systems, wireless sensor networks and applications to infectious disease dynamics and public health. Methodologically, the goal is to extend the traditional toolbox of complex systems research with data mining and machine learning techniques and with the use of scalable computational infrastructures that can deal with large-scale records of activity from modern techno-social systems.

At present, the focus is on two main research areas:

 I. To measure and model dynamical networks of human mobility and contact patterns in a variety of real-world settings, relevant for public health;

II. To study the structure and dynamics of systems that entangle human behaviour and information networks, such as the main on-line social networks, in order to model their emergent dynamics and phenomena.

Data Interfaces

Data Interfaces aims to experiment with the development of interfaces and formats for data rich scenarios by merging the competences of communication design, complex systems science, and computer science.

KNOWeSCAPE will tackle the problem of structuring and locating meaningful knowledge, as information is growing exponentially. This project is supported by COST, an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level.

Multiplex proposes a substantial paradigm shift for the development of a mathematical, computational and algorithmic framework for multi-level complex networks. Firstly, this will lead to a significant progress in the understanding and the prediction of complex multi-level systems. Secondly, it will enable a better control, and optimization of their dynamics.

Social Media Analytics for Youth Unemployment

This project targets the problem of youth unemployment in Italy, whose rate touched 40% in 2014 according to the International Labour Organisation, aiming at improving the current understanding of factors driving active job search, as well as the institutional capabilities of acting on this problem by means of targeted campaigns.

SocioPatterns is an interdisciplinary research collaboration that adopts a data-driven methodology with the aim of uncovering fundamental patterns in social dynamics and coordinated human activity.The SocioPatterns team also works on developing tools and techniques to represent, analyze and visualize the collected data.
