Open Position: postdoc in Machine Learning and Network Science

Job Description
The ISI Foundation  is looking for an exceptional candidate to fill an open postdoctoral position in Machine Learning and Network Science with a particular focus on renormalization and dimensionality reduction of complex networks.

The appointed researcher will work within the areas of Computational Social Science, Mathematics and Foundations of Complex Systems and Machine Learning.
A key problem in these areas is the following: how can we infer the behavior of a system without the need to actually simulate the whole system? This is especially relevant for very large networks (e.g. social networks) or when we don’t have the full network at hand (i.e., when simulating the propagation of a disease in a medium-tolarge population).
The project in which the appointed researcher will be involved aims at developing new theoretical and computational tools that will enable solving the aforementioned challenge, opening the path to novel applications in data science, computational epidemiology, ecology and computational social sciences, in addition to the theoretical possibilities that such a framework entails.
Apart from generally contributing to the analysis and modelling of temporal and multilayer networks, the post-doc will extend the effort made by researchers of the areas about learning new network representations while reducing their dimensionality, in other terms to build embedding of temporal networks.

Specifically the researcher will:

- Use multilinear algebra, spectral methods, machine learning techniques (such as neural networks) to extract temporal and structural patterns from networks.
- Develop new representations of both temporal and multilayer networks
- Work on the interaction between dynamical processes and those new representations.
The work is expected to have a strong theoretical component but will be anchored in a data-driven approach.

Required skills for this position :

Ph.D in theoretical physics, mathematics or computer science.
Experience in complex networks is expected .
Some previous experience in machine learning would be very much welcome.
Have good programming skills in at least one of the following languages : Python, C++.
Fluency in English both spoken and written.
Highly collaborative spirit and personal initiative and excellent personal skills.
