Interdisciplinary research and multi-sectoral studies are gradually gaining recognition in the world of science and scientific pursuit on multiple levels. The concept of One Health is the representation of a true holistic approach in tackling global issues. One Health is defined as “a collaborative and trans-disciplinary approach to achieve optimal health recognising the interconnection between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.” As such, it requires multiple actors from the most diverse backgrounds. In this seminar, I will introduce my academic background as a young scientist and discuss projects spanning from conservation of native species up until zoonotic tools to assess animal husbandry practices. I will link this expertise to the work of One Health research and present the One Health Centre of Excellence at the University of Florida. Thus, establishing a connection between the Big Data and the world of Data Science and its fundamental importance to improve health research. There is high potential in the coordination of researchers in One Health and Data Science; the crossing of this disciplinary boundary will establish a functional collaboration, encourage holistic science and improve public health on numerous levels.
